Abstract

SOON after the turn of the century, a sixteen year‐old boy left Charterhouse school ‘by mutual consent’. He went to Dresden to learn German, spent most of his time in the theatres and, on returning, told his parents that he wanted to be an actor. But the year was 1904, when parents could still say no, and he was sent to the City.
