Abstract
THE basis of all navigation is the compass. It will therefore be readily understood that for years the greatest efforts have been made to improve the compass, to make it come up to all the requirements of flight. Unfortunately, this is only possible by means of a compromise, because the qualities required in a good compass, as far as construction is concerned, tend to contradict one another.
