Abstract

This paper looks at three different companies — one from brewing, one from automative components and another from the aerospace industry — which in recent years had made significant attempts to alter the organisation of work. The paper asks four questions: what role is there for trade union participation in the introduction of change to work structures? Is this participatory role something which management grant or which unions force them to concede? How do unions respond to managements' strategies and how successful are they? Are we witnessing “a new collectivism” or are unions being increasingly marginalised?
