Books and Reading in War‐Time
Abstract
ONE of the most heartening signs in these dark days is the persistence with which good books are being issued and read. Almost surrounded, and in danger of attempted invasion, it is of our very heritage that we should cling all the closer to those things which are the refreshment of the spirit. The Daily Express may bellow that “There is no such thing as culture in war‐time,” but the government knows better, and its appropriation of sums to further cultural activities showed real, if unexpected, vision.
