Literary Life in the Coffee‐Houses

Abstract
Of London's 17th and 18th century coffee‐houses it was said that a man could pick up more knowledge there than by applying himself to books for a month. Add to this that he could match his wits in almost any type of argument, plan immortal poetry and plays, or merely act the part of an intelligent observer, and it is easy to realize why so many literary personalities of those days frequented them.
