Abstract

I was much interested in the good work described in the first number of this magazine by Col. Newcombe of the Central Library for Students, because a long time ago I used to think when I came here that one of the most clamant needs on the countryside was that of meeting the book wants of the young men and young women whose bent was towards study. And there are many such in the country places, youths who have kept in touch with the village schoolmasters and teachers, and who know that there are worlds outside the boundaries of their immediate environment and knowledge, and who hope to explore abroad some day. Their numbers are not large, but here and there, as in my corner, we have them.
