Abstract

Since corrosion occurs as a result of the reaction of metallic materials with their environment, the importance of treating or conditioning the latter by the use of inhibitors or by water treatment cannot be over‐emphasised. The Corrosion Section of the Division of Materials Applications at N.P.L. has had a continuing interest in this topic for about 30 years. As with many other fields of research, this activity received an additional stimulus in the 1939–1945 war period. At that time inhibitors were required for anti‐freeze solutions for military vehicles, for aircraft deicing fluids and for the preservation of military equipment during transport and storage. Such requirements led to the development of the use of sodium benzoate and cyclohexylamine carbonate as corrosion inhibitors.
