Abstract
A view of cybernetics both in the past and in the future is given. The origins and definition of cybernetics are considered and the importance and complementarity of control and communications assessed. The practical problems of each involve optimal prediction if best performance is to be achieved. The essential role of feedback, which in a general sense is a manifestation of interaction, is emphasised.
