Abstract

THIS TALE OF THE AUTOMATION OF THE “MACHINE SHOPS OF THE '90S” HIGHLIGHTS THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE SO OFTEN EXPERIENCED WHEN COMPANIES DECIDE TO “AUTOMATE” ‐ On a sprawling, grassy campus north of Washington DC, the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, operates two research laboratories — one opened in 1984, the other in 1988 — to push the envelope of advanced flexible automation and help small and medium‐sized US manufacturers into the 21st century.
