Sanmina-SCI closes Ayrshire Plant with the loss of about 500 jobs

(The Herald, Glasgow, Scotland) Scotland's beleaguered electronics industry suffered another blow yesterday when a US-based company announced the closure of its Ayrshire plant with the loss of about 500 jobs.

Sanmina-SCI blamed the economic downturn in the industry for the closure of its facility at Irvine.

North Ayrshire Council warned that the community was "slowly bleeding to death" and claimed the economic problems now facing the area were as severe as those in Lanarkshire following the closing of the Ravenscraig steel plant.

The announcement brings to almost 15,000 the number of jobs lost in Scotland's electronics sector in the past 18 months – including more than 630 at Hewlett Packard in Erskine, Renfrewshire, early last month.

Sanmina-SCI, which is based in San Jose, California, informed workers of its decision yesterday and has started a 90-day consultation period with staff.

The actual plant closure date would be dependent on the consultation period with the employees and discussions with customers.
