Intelligent Reasoning Systems, Inc. (IRSI) has developed an automated optical inspection (AOI) system precise enough to inspect high density boards. The FSI 1000 system was developed as the solution for fine structure inspection, with the intelligence to detect and classify defects occurring in high density interconnect (HDI) manufacturing.
IRSI, which has a European division based in the UK, has applied its adaptive knowledge-based processing engine to the HDI industry to enable automated inspection of bare high density substrates using leading edge AOI technology. The system provides advanced geometric and surface defect detection and classification, precision colour imaging with dual lighting fields for optimal viewing, and the company's patent-pending advanced reasoning engine.
Virtually eliminating false calls and with a near zero escape rate, FSI 1000 uses the latest in statistical process control systems to analyse all defects and provide full classification. It features a three-chip colour CCD area camera with an automatic zoom lens, capable of recognising defects as small as 12.5µm and inspecting panels as large as 381mm x 381mm with a thickness of between 0.10mm and 31.75mm. The camera has the power to determine exactly where in the production process identified defects occurred.
The FSI 1000 uses the same cutting edge technology as IRSI's PWA inspection machines, which were originally used in defence technology. After consultations with electronics industry leaders, the company's founders realised the potential application to the PWA, PWB and HDI automated optical inspection marketplaces.
