Olde Bekkink, M., McCowan, C., Falk, G.A., Teljeur, C., Van de Laar, F.A. and Fahey, T.,Diagnostic accuracy systematic review of rectal bleeding in combination with other symptoms, signs and tests in relation to colorectal cancer,British Journal of Cancer,2010,Vol. 102,pp. 48-58

This review concluded that no individual symptom, sign or diagnostic test in patients with rectal bleeding was likely to conclusively raise probability of colorectal cancer in primary care settings. Even conventionally stated “red flag” symptoms, such as weight loss and blood mixed with stool, had modest diagnostic value. These conclusions reflected the data presented and are likely to be reliable.
