Improving clinical practice using clinical decision support systems

Improving clinical practice using clinical decision support systemsK. Kawamoto, C.A. Houlihan, E.A. Balas, D.F. LobachBritish Medical Journal2005Vol. 330p. 765

Included in this review were a variety of interventions based upon reminder or prompt, feedback, or decision support systems. The majority were computer-based with printed patient-specific advice; others included non-electronic systems with chart-based, patient-specific advice and decision support within computerised order entry systems. The review identified four features associated with the success of decision support systems in clinical practice:

  1. 1.

    computer-based;

  2. 2.

    provided as part of clinician workflow;

  3. 3.

    delivered at the time and place of decision making; and

  4. 4.

    actionable recommendations provided.

These features were supported by the evidence presented, but potential biases in the study selection process meant that relevant studies may have been missed.
