Make flying more comfortable

Keywords: Passenger transport, Aerospace engineering
The National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) has been examining ways to make flying more comfortable for aircraft passengers and crew. Its FACE (Friendly Aircraft Cabin Environment) project has looked into all the factors affecting on-board comfort, like noise, vibrations and temperature.
In a virtual environment, the project has simulated conditions like air currents in the cabin and heat exchange via radiation, and it has estimated the thermic response of passengers to such conditions.
The FACE simulation model makes it possible to analyse and optimise climatic conditions in any aircraft, in both the passenger cabin and the crew's working and rest areas. It allows carriers to work out for instance how best to refresh the air or minimise “climatic differences” between different seat positions.
The NLR has been co-operating on the FACE project with Airbus Germany and the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics.
