Industry leaders impressed by outstanding engineering achievement of pupils

Schools from around the UK recently impressed Industry Professionals from Jaguar Cars and BAE Systems, at the National Final of the Fl Team in Schools CAD/CAM Design Challenge. This took place at the BETT Show 2003 in the National Hall, Olympia, London. After months of careful design and painstaking alterations, the top 22 teams in the country competed for the coveted prizes.

The challenge addresses the chronic shortage of qualified engineers in the UK by raising the profile of engineering in schools. (The UK needs 35,000 engineers a year to stand still, but is currently producing just 10,000 a year.) Designing and racing model formula one cars encourages boys and girls alike to use industry standard software and manufacturing techniques in an exciting and innovative way.

Teams were judged on eight different criteria, and to win overall prizes, cars had to be strong across the board. Students taking part have designed modelled and manufactured their own Fl model cars using CAD/CAM software packages, fulfilling specific guidelines, just like a real Fl team. Prizes were awarded as follows.

  • Overall 1st Prize – Ramsey Abbey High School (Mid region),

  • Overall 2nd Prize – St Josephs College (Mid region),

  • Overall 3rd Prize – Archbishop Temple School (NW region),

  • 11-13 Age Group Winners – ADT College (SE and London region),

  • 14-16 Age Group Winners – Glengormley High School (Nl region),

  • 16+ Age Group Winners – Carrickfergus Grammer School (Nl region),

  • Fastest Car Award – Hodgson High School (NW region),

  • Outstanding Achievement Award – Featherstone High School (York region),

  • Marketing and Sponsorship Award – Coleraine Academic Institute (Nl region),

  • Best Engineered Car – Trinity House School (Humber region).
