PRC-DeSoto International, a PPG Industries company, announced at the recent Paris Airshow that it has qualified the first high-solids exterior aircraft coatings system at Airbus Industrie.
The company's high-solids, low VOC, Desoprime CA7002 epoxy primer and Desothane CA8000 polyurethane top coat comprise the system.
According to Roald Johannsen, European aerospace marketing director, Airbus selected the system because of its environmental benefits and enhanced material efficiency.
"Compared with conventional formulas, Desothane HS top coat and Desoprime primer have a higher percentage of solids for less material usage to achieve the needed coverage, and less solvent for lower VOC emissions when being applied", Johannsen said.
"Desothane HS top coat is the only high solids, low VOC top coat approved by both Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group and Airbus".
Johannsen noted that PRC-DeSoto has product extensions to Desothane HS top coat.
"We pioneered the metallic appearance and colour effect as well as the application parameters for a mica base coat-clear coat system for airlines", Johannsen said.
The company also used Paris to launch a low VOC, high-solids top coat for military, aircraft and-land-based defense vehicles.
The Desothane CA8300 top coat is said to be chemical-agent resistant, and has low reflectivity to infrared and solar energy for reduced visibility, according to Roald Johannsen.
"The coating meets the extremely demanding performance requirements for military aircraft and land-based defense vehicles", Johannsen said. "Additionally, compared with conventional coatings, it has higher solids so less material can be used to achieve the needed coverage, and a lower percentage of solvent for reduced VOC emissions when being applied".
Available in a full range of colours and glosses, Desothane CA8300 top coat can be applied over Desoprime AQ water-based primers from PRC-DeSoto for a complete, environmentally friendly system, Johannsen said.
