PTC announces two updates to its PTC i-Series of flexible engineering solutions: Pro/MECHANICA 2000i2 and Pro/DESKTOP 2000i2. Both products are said to extend and enhance the value of the PTC i-Series, which is in use at more than 28,000 engineering firms world-wide. Both these products work on any Intel PC running Windows 2000, NT, 95 or 98.

The PTC i-Series, which includes PTC's Pro/ENGINEER 2000i2, provides a development platform of flexible engineering solutions that spans the product development enterprise process including conceptual design, styling, design and engineering, simulation, planning, manufacturing, and in-service support.

"The PTC i-Series solutions are designed to help product designers, from builders of product packaging to engineers formulating leading aerospace and automotive designs, to work more closely with their customers and partners over the Internet", says Jon Stevenson, general manager and senior vice president, MCAD at PTC. "The 2000i2 additions to the PTC i-Series are completely interoperable with Pro/ENGINEER and bring functionality to help engineers to develop products more quickly and competently."

Pro/MECHANICA 2000i2 claims significant enhancements focused on providing a scalable simulation environment to support all stages of product development within a truly flexible engineering process:

  • Scalable simulation modelling lets users interact directly with the Pro/ENGINEER model and user interface to define material properties, loading, connections and other boundary conditions for solutions using either Pro/MECHANICA or third-party products such as NASTRAN. Users can quickly switch modes to maximise data reuse and capture of design intent.

  • Expanded model tree concept includes simulation features, allowing users to quickly create, modify and interrogate simulation entities with a minimum of menu picks. Smart simulation features recognise geometric patterns to provide rapid modelling and simulation through-put.

  • Fatigue adviser allows engineers to predict and improve the fatigue performance of their designs early in the process. Using proven technology from nCode, with Pro/MECHANICA's proven accuracy and optimisation, Fatigue adviser offers shape and performance optimisation capabilities for durability assessment.

Pro/DESKTOP 2000i2 claims capabilities in rapid modelling, data reuse, and "what-if" analysis, providing an unequalled set of facilities for conceptual engineering and a streamlined data path to Pro/ENGINEER:

  • Configurable models help engineers design mechanisms by allowing them to work on a mechanism in different positions simultaneously in different windows. Changes to one position are instantly realised in all other positions of the model. Configurable models also permit designers to put a stake in the ground for a possible design concept and create families of similar models to be captured in a single design.

  • Deformation modelling facilitates reuse of existing designs, allowing engineers to reposition, resize and remove features from Pro/ENGINEER models and imported designs to suggest modifications or create new concepts.

  • New design palette allows rapid solid modelling by providing freeform, drag-and-drop placement of standard components, features and sketches. Standard shapes allow rapid creations of kinematic mechanisms in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) form. Solid concepts are easily roughed out, and dimensions and constraints can be added as the designers converge on their goals.

  • Enhanced drawing and notebook environment offers new tools for creating algebraic and conditional intent, reuse of legacy 2D data, streamlined workflow with a new browser, and support for configurable drawing standards with dozens of improvements to annotation.
