Materials teaching to receive a boost from new subject centre

Keywords: Materials, Education

A new centre that will provide support to lecturers and teachers of materials science was launched recently at Materials Congress 2000 at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, UK. The Materials Subject Centre, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), will provide professional support for innovations in teaching and learning and will be staffed by practising teachers of materials science.

"This is a great opportunity for the subject to present itself in an attractive and dynamic way and to enhance our appeal to potential students", says Professor Peter Goodhew from the University of Liverpool who will be launching the centre. "The message to people both inside and outside our profession is that materials educators are taking their important task very seriously and are determined to provide the very best provision for students of our discipline."
