Ultra announce that its Hub Integrated Power Switching System ("HIPSS") (Plate 1) has been awarded Millennium Product Status by the Design Council. Ultra was prompt to respond to Prime Minister Tony Blair's challenge to businesses to demonstrate that the UK is the creative powerhouse of the world. Ultra's product was commended by Scottish Deputy Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, Nicol Stephen, speaking at the Lighthouse Building in Glasgow on 6 September 1999.

HIPSS fits into the propeller hub of an aircraft to protect against ice formation. HIPSS consists of an innovative hub-mounted generator and electronics assembly, together with a fuselage-mounted interface unit, and is the first of its kind, replacing the traditional slip ring systems. HIPSS has several novel features. For example, there is no contact between the static and rotating components and the system requires no scheduled maintenance.

According to Ultra HIPSS has been designed for a very high reliability and delivers substantial cost of ownership savings. For airlines, whose reliability record is of paramount importance, HIPSS means fewer delays and cancellations.
