SYSPLY reduces modelling time and optimises composite components

ESI Group has launched SYSPLY, a simulation software package for designing composite material products. Developed from COMPOSIC, it reportedly improves the structural analysis of composite material products. According to ESI SYSPLY automates many aspects of the model building process by allowing the user to work with layers rather than having to be concerned with individual elements. It also allows users to view contour stress plots of the lay-up with ply-drop-offs taken into account.

It is believed to be an ideal tool for many industries. Aeronautical industries are said to benefit from SYSPLY to evaluate composite material behaviour of components such as tail plane and floor beams.

The software, we are told, reduces modelling time as users define 3D surface geometry of the tool once only. Numerous links to CAD tools are available such as IGES, STEP AP203 and VDA-FS formats. Users specify the boundaries, thickness, material and orientation of each layer and it automatically models it. SYSPLY reportedly allows engineers to enter properties of layers and core materials. Laminates are built from single layers or sublaminates with automatic offset of material thickness.

SYSPLY post-processor visualises the entire composite structure rather than being limited to areas with a homogeneous ply structure as with many conventional finite element programs. Users may tailor both the amount and type of results to their needs, saving data management time and storage space. For example, it allows users to ask for storage of the properties at selected layers or select points only or may ask for only selected results values to be calculated. SYSPLY is available on Windows NT and UNIX platforms.
