IPE of Southend, a specialist aerospace subcontractor, reports that it has increased productivity in preparing CNC programs by a quarter by upgrading to the latest EdgeCAM off-line programming package from its original DOS-based Pathtrace PAMS system.

Before making the decision to adopt the EdgeCAM upgrade from Truline Automation, a division of Pathtrace plc., IPE's engineers researched the CAM market and found major benefits of EdgeCAM against competitor systems. These included ease of use, interface with a range of CNC controls, associative toolpath capability, tool kitting and tool library, CAD integration capability and, importantly, customer service and support. Associative tool paths were seen as important to accommodate geometric changes from customers or for jobs set up on multiple pallets when tool paths have to be translated and indexed around fixturing cubes.

In addition, the tool kitting capability of EdgeCAM was ideal for IPE's application, while the ability of CAD integration accepting external CAD files from customers was seen as an important element for future development.
