Philip Ruffles, a designer whose talents have led Rolls-Royce to the summit of engineering success, has been elected to the RSA's Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry, the most distinguished accolade the UK design profession has to offer.
Philip Ruffles, who joined Rolls-Royce after graduating from Bristol University in 1961, contributed to the success of the RB211 engine launched in 1968 in several roles, including that of the project's chief engineer. He became head of engineering for helicopter engines in 1981, and subsequently director of design engineering. As director of the Engineering Aerospace Group from 1991 to 1996, he was responsible for an engineering team of 7,000 people. The major products developed in this time were the Trent 700 and 800 engines for the A330 and B777 programmes.
After a lifetime of service to the company, Philip Ruffles was appointed to the main board of Rolls-Royce plc as director engineering and technology earlier this year.
