The Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) has reported the great success of its 23rd Annual Conference and Exhibition held in Harrogate recently, with the theme “Coatings for the Protection of Structures”.

Key speakers included Martin Earlam from the Environment Agency with a paper on Maintaining the Thames Barrier, Brendon Fitzsimons from Pyeroy Ltd presented “Painting the Forth Rail Bridge” from a contractor's viewpoint, “Painting the Forth Road Bridge” from an owner's viewpoint, by Barry Colford depute bridgemaster and “Quality control monitoring and testing for concrete structures” presented by John Fletcher of Elcometer Instruments Ltd. Over the 3 day event, 38 papers were presented covering four main topics – floodgates and immersed structures, protection of steel bridges, steel in power and chemical plant and the protection of concrete structures, presented by leading industry experts.

David Deacon, President of the Institute of Corrosion said: “Over 200 delegates in total attended the event, many of whom were member companies of the Institute. We had some excellent speakers and chairmen for our eight lively sessions this year and received some very positive feedback regarding the informative nature and direct relevance of so many of the presentations. The annual event is our opportunity to let our members meet with clients in an informal but educational environment and encourage discussion and best practice sharing with industry.”

The event also gave ICorr the opportunity to launch its new supplement to its bi-monthly magazine Corrosion Management. The supplement, called the “Protective Coatings Update” was introduced to meet the requirements of the Institute's increasing number of paint and coatings orientated members.

President David Deacon explains: “The protective coatings industry plays a vital role in protecting structures, plant and equipment from corrosion, therefore we believe it deserved its own dedicated supplement to the magazine. Protective Coatings Update will provide up to date information on surface preparation, application and new coating types and inform readers of new industry standards and developments which may affect their business. We are looking forward to a positive response from members and other subscribers.”

In addition to the main conference was a technical exhibition, which included many major coatings suppliers and applicators, displaying the latest coatings, surface preparation methods and other services.

The ICorr is a learned society and registered charity that has been serving the corrosion science, technology and engineering management and economic needs of individuals, academia and industry. Established in 1959, the Institute aims to encourage the exchange of information and ideas on corrosion, which costs the UK around 4 per cent of GNP per annum.
