A partnership with testing specialist the Zwick Roell Group could make the University of Wolverhampton the Midlands centre of excellence for the mechanical testing of engineered assemblies, components and materials.

Under the agreement, which is thought to be unique, the School of Engineering and the Built Environment will be equipped with a comprehensive range of the latest Zwick testing equipment – much of it freely donated – to help it achieve the highest standards in teaching and researching testing principles and practices.

The aim of the partnership is to enhance the School's reputation so that it attracts more students and obtains increased support from funding bodies.

It is expected that the enlarged and modernised resources will improve teaching methods and enable the School to develop testing services it can offer to industry. Existing links with industry should be strengthened and extended, adding further to the School's prestige and standing.

To encourage use of the facilities, Zwick will calibrate the equipment free of charge, a considerable saving on annual running costs.

As part of the agreement, the company will provide a complete technical library on testing technology for both academics and students, who will also be invited to participate in commercial use of the centre and to visit Zwick manufacturing plants to see new and current machines in production.

For its part the company aims to use the centre as a Midlands venue for demonstrating Zwick technology to potential customers. It also hopes to run training sessions, exhibitions and seminars, sometimes in association with the School's academic staff.
