Keywords TW Metals, Tubing, Titanium

Specialist metals distributor TW Metals has announced that it has secured a contract from Sirona Dental Systems GmbH to supply titanium tubing for the manufacture of dental tool hand pieces (Plate 2).

Plate 2 Titanium tubing from TW Metals is super-plastically formed into dental tool handpieces for Sirona Dental Systems GmbH

The contract, valued at around £0.25 million covers a three year period and is for the supply of close tolerance tubing in titanium alloy 3A1 2.5V – a grade more normally used for medical implants and for aircraft hydraulic systems. According to TW Metals it was selected by Sirona because of its excellent formability, it is super-plastically formed by them into its unique and ergonomically designed casing shape.

This titanium alloy claims key properties, also, for the finished dental tool, including its aesthetic appearance. It is light weight, antiallergical, corrosion resistant and can be sterilised without losing strength.

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH, formerly Siemens Medical Group Dental Division, is based in Bensheim, Germany. Through its Australian distributor, Sirona provided all of the major equipment for the dental clinic at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
