Recommended practices available for detecting discontinuities in coating systems

Keywords NACE, Standards, Coatings

NACE has recently revised its standard for detecting discontinuities in coating systems on conductive substrates. RP0188-99 Discontinuity (Holiday) Testing of Protective Coatings on Conductive Substrates - Technically revised

1999, this standard recommended practice provides a procedure for electrical detection of minute discontinuities in coating systems that are liquid-applied to conductive substrates other than pipelines. Procedures are described for determining discontinuities using two types of test equipment:

  1. 1.

    low-voltage wet sponge; and

  2. 2.

    high-voltage spark testers.

Prices: $26 list, $20 NACE member (item #21038).

This standard recommended practice and approximately 110 other standards are included in the new version of the NACE Standards on CD-ROM. Updated bi-annually, the NACE Standards on CD-ROM contains the complete collection of internationally accepted and consensus-approved NACE standards. With the NACE Standards on CD-ROM, users have access to standard recommended practices, standard test methods, and standard materials requirements - including joint NACE/ SSPC standards. The technologies addressed in NACE standards include coatings, linings, metallurgy, materials selection, cathodic/anodic protection, laboratory testing, surface preparation, pipelines, and more.

The NACE Standards on CD-ROM provides immediate access to information, illustrations, charts, tables, and, most important, the answers to questions on corrosion control and technology. The full-text standards appear on the screen exactly as they appear in print form. Unlike the older versions of the NACE Standards on CD-ROM, the graphics are actually embedded in the document, so users can view and print the standard in its entirety - there is no need to access a separate graphic library to view or print an illustration, chart, or table.

System requirements: Windows - i486 or Pentium processor-based PC; Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later; 16MB RAM; 10MB available hard disk space for Acrobat: 25MB available hard disk space if all NACE standards are installed (full installation not required); super VGA monitor with 256 colours or better is recommended but not essential.

Macintosh - Apple Power Macintosh or compatible; MacOS software version 7.1.2 or later: 6.5MB RAM; 8MB available hard disk space for Acrobat; 25MB available hard disk space if all NACE standards are installed (full installation not required): super VGA monitor with 256 colours or better is recommended but not essential.

Other platforms that are compatible with Adobe Acrobat can be used, but are not supported by NACE International. The NACE Standards on CD-ROM comes complete with Acrobat Reader 4.0. Note: Adobe Acrobat 4.0 is not compatible with Windows 3.x platforms. To run the NACE Standards on CD-ROM using Windows 3.x, you must install Acrobat Reader 3.0 or 3.01. Those versions can be downloaded for free from the Adobe Web site.

The NACE Standards on CD-ROM price includes bi-annual updates for one year.

Single user: $360 list, $300 NACE member (item #26200).

Network version: $2,400 list and NACE member (Item #26210), unlimited number of users, unlimited number of standards.
