Elcometer Instruments Ltd, the Manchester based specialist in instrumentation for the testing and quality control of coatings, has published the Visual Comparison Manual for application and coating defects (Plate 2).

Enclosed in a handy binder, this manual, in English, German and Spanish, contains 78 top quality, full colour photographs of the defects that are associated with coatings used for corrosion protection.

The manual is divided into four sections: the introduction, the illustrations, the table of defects and the inspection manual. Fully indexed, the photographs and illustrations cover both pre-surface conditions and the application and coating defects. The table of defects has 38 defect types with their descriptions and their probable causes. Paint Compatibility and Paint Properties charts can be found at the end of this table of defect section, providing much practical information for those involved with coatings on a regular basis.

Offered as a manual for daily use on site as well as in the office, the pages are protected so that dirt can be wiped from them easily and the inspector, the surveyor and the specifier alike can reference the photographs in all working environments.
