Twin-bore cylinders deliver precise actuation and double the linear force

Keywords: Actuators, Cylinders

A new range of double-bore, rectangular cross section cylinders provides compact linear motion with twice the force of traditional designs (see Plate 3). The nonrotating Twin Bore Series from US company, Bimba Manufacturing, includes three models - basic, double end, and air table. Five bore sizes are available from 12mm to 32mm, and stroke lengths from 10 to 150mm are offered in 5 or 10mm increments.

Reported by the company to have the best size/performance ratio in today's market, the basic and double ended models feature extra long, composite or ball bushing bearings. The longer bearings resist deflection and improve linear accuracy. The air table model has a rigid, linear rail with recirculating ball bearings.

Bumpers and retract stroke adjustment are standard on the basic and double ended models. Magnetic position sensing and high temperature operation (-15 to 135°C) are standard options on all models. The air table version has optional external stroke adjustment and shock absorbers.

Variety of applications

Compact size, precise linear motion and enhanced thrust suit Twin Bore cylinders to a variety of automated operations, including slitter knife actuation, pick and place devices, machine tool and automatic assembly machine actuation, and robotics.

The Bimba Manufacturing Company, based in Monee, Illinois, USA, manufactures a full range of pneumatic actuators. The company has four manufacturing facilities in the USA and one in Great Britain. Each maintains a full inventory to support over 130 distributers worldwide. CAD drawings are available for download from Bimba's Web site at www.bimba.com.
