Electronics manufacturing companies are investing in digital inspection techniques to improve their understanding of product assembly and tolerance management.

The Toshiba Corporation of Japan has selected VALISYS tolerance management software to support its implementation of the standard Six Sigma total quality process. This aims at achieving business excellence by becoming more customer orientated in assessing the product's aesthetic appeal, as well as its functional performance.

Toshiba's Computer Product Division will be using VALISYS/Assembly for 3D tolerance analysis and the optimisation of new products and VALISYS/CMM for creating programs for the inspection of component parts by co-ordinate measuring machines.

VALISYS provides a graphical, easy to use and closed-loop environment for quality engineering. A key element of Tecnomatix Technologies' Digital Factory solutions, VALISYS provides the tools to define, predict, measure and analyse the form, fit and relationship between all the components that make up the finished product.

Other Toshiba factories are planning to install VALISYS software. In commenting on the investment, Mr Takahashi, Chief Specialist of Toshiba Headquarters, said:

Toshiba's goals are to implement the standard Six Sigma quality process and to reduce the measurement planning and programming cycle by 50 percent. We are very impressed with the VALISYS Tolerance Management closed-loop concept and believe that VALISYS will be a key in enabling us to achieve these goals. We look forward to the successful implementation of this technology and to further implementing Tecnomatix tolerance management tools throughout the Toshiba organisation.

Gareth Watts, General Manager Northern Europe for Tecnomatix, sees this development as relevant to the UK consumer and industrial electronics sector, in particular where equipment manufacturers are sub-contracting key components.

"There is a growing need to understand the implications for correct dimensional specifications", he said, adding: "We are expanding our customer base into the electronics industry. Toshiba joins other major electronics companies such as Nokia, Ericsson, Alacatel and Hitachi who have also chosen Tecnomatix products to improve their production engineering processes."
