Tescon announces the launch of its Point 309 high speed SMT mounter, featuring a full-camera-vision, touchless-centering system utilising multiple cameras to provide a view of the underside of the component to be placed. This enables more accurate component placement than alternative vision technologies and allows automatic visual inspection of fine-pitch SMDs, QFPs and BGAs (see Plate 3).

To handle a wide range of SMT devices, including all types of standard and fine-pitch components from 0402s and SO chips to QFPs and BGAs up to 35mm square, the Point 309 uses an advanced three-head configuration, with enhanced rotational accuracy. Furthermore, different types of heads may be used to optimise the placement of a variety of components

The combination of the three-head configuration and direct drive AC servo motor axis control ensures that the Point 309 is capable of placement speeds of up to 0.36 chips/sec. (10,000 components per hour). Even at full placement speed, there is no degradation in placement accuracy (±0.08mm). In addition, placement head repeatability or repetition accuracy is 0.02mm.

Plate 3 Tescon's new full vision SMT mounter boasts ±0.08mm placement accuracy with the ability to visually inspect alignment of fine-pitch SMDs, QFPs and BGAs

The Point 309 can be charged with up to 56 different types of components using 8mm tape feeders. Slim feeders, which double the system's component range, are optional. Feeder types handled by the Point 309 include 8mm to 44mm tape feeders, pallet tables, auto pallet changers and vibratory feeders.

Offering a high degree of flexibility in terms of the types of products that can be manufactured using the Point 309, a standard in-line conveyor system and automatic board transfer capability allow processing of boards from 50mm by 50mm up to 330mm by 250mm. Board thicknesses of 0.5mm to 2mm can be accommodated.

The Point 309 provides manufacturers with a cost-effective, advanced solution for assembling a wide range of board types at a very low cost per mounted component figure as well as delivering exceptional accuracy, speed and repeatability.
