Notes on key reviews in this issue

  • Brill’s New Paul […] A Biographical Dictionary (RR 2014/274). Sixth supplement to Brill’s New Pauly previously reviewed at length in these columns (RR 2003/271). More than 700 entries are provided for individuals from the fourteenth century onwards who have made a significant contribution to classical studies.

  • Cambridge Dictionary of Linguistics (RR 2014/259). New linguistic dictionary aimed primarily at undergraduates at British universities. With 3,000 entries is not as comprehensive as one of the main competitors, David Crystal’s Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics (6th ed. 2009) (RR 2009/223).

  • Encyclopedia of American Recessions and Depressions (RR 2014/251). A new two-volume set from ABC-Clio covering 14 economic recessions and depressions in American history. Will provide a useful economic-focused overview, but will not be an alternative to specialist works focusing on aspects of specific depressions, such as The Great Depression in America: A Cultural Encyclopedia (RR 2008/280).

  • Food and Drink in America: A Full Course Encyclopedia (RR 2014/253). Major three-volume set, the last containing, in standard ABC-Clio style, primary source documents. One of a number of recent reference works on American food and drink, the most popular of which is The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America (RR 2005/261).

  • Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur’ān (RR 2014/246). Review of the first volume of a new encyclopedia from the Center for Islamic Studies in Alberta, planned for seven volumes. Due to its religious affiliation, of most benefit to users who have a basic knowledge and understanding of the Qur’ān.

  • Palgrave Literary Dictionary of Shelley (RR 2014/260). Latest in Palgrave’s useful series of concise dictionaries on major literary figures, which also offer chronologies and other supporting information as well as dictionary entries. Follows The Palgrave Literary Dictionary of Byron (RR 2011/079).

  • Wellbeing: A Complete Reference Guide (RR 2014/248). Another Wiley-Blackwell blockbuster reference offering six themed volumes on aspects of “well-being”, such as Wellbeing and the Environment (Vol. II) and Wellbeing in Later Life (Vol. IV).
