Stability in Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz may not last

Significance

This complements earlier agreements with the two groups in late 2022 that not all factions had subscribed to. Consequently, there is currently no active rebellion in this historically conflict-afflicted region.

Impacts

• Improved security would reduce disruptions to ongoing work on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
• The humanitarian situation in the region may improve, as farming can be expected to resume, while some displaced persons may return.
• Ongoing conflict in neighbouring Amhara and Oromia will keep the region cut off from the rest of the country, stifling recovery efforts.
