New AU-Somalia mission may face old challenges

Monday, August 5, 2024

Significance

This included discussions around a proposed successor mission to the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which is due to withdraw by end-2024.

Impacts

  • The proposed AU Stabilisation and Support Mission in Somalia is expected to comprise some 11,000 troops with a mandate until 2030.
  • Approval of a post-ATMIS mission may slow the pace of ATMIS’s withdrawal as troops may simply be ‘re-hatted’ under the new mission.
  • Further discussions will be held at a joint AU-UN conference in October in Addis Ababa.
