Greek farmers will want sector profitability restored

Monday, March 25, 2024

Significance

In response to farmers’ protests across the EU, including in Greece in February, the Commission is considering allowing farmers more flexibility in complying with new environmental targets. Farmers have demanded a more gradual transition to sustainable farming and better protection from cheaper imports.

Impacts

  • The declining health of the Greek farming sector will weaken Greek and EU food security.
  • Migration from the countryside to large cities is expected to continue in the next 2-3 years.
  • The predominance of small farms and ageing farming populations will restrict future productivity growth.
