North Macedonian renewables policy will survive poll

Monday, February 12, 2024

Significance

From a small base, more electricity is being generated from renewable energy sources (RES): 551 megawatts of installed capacity were licensed in the past two years. However, hydropower is still the largest RES element, recent investments have yet to become operational and thermal power plants (TPP) still generate most power.

Impacts

  • The COP28 announcement is expected to help North Macedonia attract new green energy investment.
  • The EU will require North Macedonia to improve its legal and regulatory framework to enable greater participation by RES in the energy mix.
  • Crucial energy projects such as the Cebren hydropower plant will require renewed efforts from the country’s next government.
