Israel’s new unity will depend on the Gaza war

Wednesday, November 29, 2023

Israeli society has been transfixed by the psychological impact of the daily hostage releases since November 24, heavily engaging with each family and fearing for those excluded. The truce has largely underlined a new national unity that emerged in the wake of the Hamas-led assault in southern Israel, but also raises new questions over future war aims.

  • Most Israelis seem ready to weather increased international isolation in the cause of restoring security.
  • If the conflict drags on, urgent non-war-related legislation could create cracks in the unity government.
  • The military offensive will be unable to wipe out support for Hamas, which has increased.
  • Right-wing rivals will assess their chances against a weakened premier when new elections are announced.
