Mexico’s presidency is Sheinbaum’s to lose

Tuesday, September 26, 2023

Significance

She will face former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who on September 6 was named the de-facto candidate of the ruling ‘Together We’ll Make History’ (JHH) coalition, made up of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and allies. The Citizen Movement (MC) is yet to select its candidate; six individuals aim to run independently.

Impacts

  • Morena’s dominant position in most states will make its sub-national candidate selection process competitive, and potentially divisive.
  • Further budget cuts for the electoral bodies and judiciary in 2024 may hinder their ability to conduct electoral processes effectively.
  • Political polarisation may increase the potential for electoral violence.
