Green transition will move slowly in Western Balkans

EU membership candidates in the region have committed to align their legislation and policies with Brussels’s green agenda. Investment in wind and solar power by domestic and foreign companies has reached record levels in recent years.


  • EU funding will support the switch from coal to renewable energy.
  • The region will attract more private investment in solar and wind power.
  • Vested economic and political interests will prolong the life of legacy TPPs running on highly polluting lignite.
