Western Balkans will toughen migration controls
Friday, March 3, 2023
Significance
Almost 150,000 irregular migrants entered the EU through the Western Balkans in 2022, a 135% increase on 2021. In response, Brussels has stepped up cooperation with regional states and is putting pressure on them to cancel visa-free travel arrangements with countries allowing migrants to go to Europe.
Impacts
- After North Macedonia, Frontex may sign an enhanced cooperation agreement with Bosnia-Hercegovina as well.
- Western Balkan countries will use migration to push for speeding up EU enlargement.
- EU will grant Kosovo visa-free travel after the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) becomes operational in 2024.
