Mexico’s electric car sector looks ripe for expansion

Wednesday, February 15, 2023

Significance

The inclusion of Mexican-assembled EVs among those eligible for US clean energy subsidies advances Mexico's ambition to develop its leading industrial sector (auto and parts making) as North America's EV manufacturing powerhouse. The US government wants half of US new-car sales to be EVs by 2030.

Impacts

  • US barriers to Chinese participation in strategic industries will expand to EV battery-making and lithium production.
  • EU and other US allies' contentious exclusion from US clean energy subsidies made available to Canada and Mexico will be quietly resolved.
  • Becoming an EV hub will require Mexico's national energy policy to revert to liberalising power generation.
