Key strait will remain South-east Asian piracy hotspot
Friday, January 20, 2023
Significance
The Singapore Strait, one of South-east Asia’s busiest trade routes, had more attacks than any other area in the world. Attacks against shipping are a persistent problem in the region, although measures undertaken by regional states have reduced them to a manageable level in recent years.
Impacts
- There will continue to be a moderate threat of maritime terrorist attacks in the southern Philippines.
- Piracy attacks in South-east Asia will not disrupt global supply chains.
- Insurance rates for ships passing through South-east Asian waters will not rise.
