Moldovan gas sector partly decouples from Russia

Wednesday, December 28, 2022

Significance

Gas is still coming from Russia at a reduced rate, but all of it is now going to the separatist Transnistria region to allow it to generate affordable electricity for Moldova. As a result, Moldova is having to buy gas at a higher price from other sources to cover its own needs.

Impacts

  • This month's ban on six television channels is intended to stop Russian war propaganda.
  • Silencing the TV channels will reduce the continuing influence exerted by politician Ilan Shor from abroad.
  • Further 'accidental' Russian missile landings inside Moldova will keep tensions high.
