Electoral changes may boost Sierra Leone ruling party
Friday, December 23, 2022
Significance
The change was first announced by the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) in October following a directive from President Julius Maada Bio. The decision is hotly contested. Opposition parties view the change as disproportionately benefiting the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
Impacts
- The impartiality of the judiciary and electoral commission will be tested further as the elections approach.
- The All People’s Congress will see its control over the Freetown City Council reduced after the June elections under the new PR system.
- The new Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Act may have a limited impact due to weak enforcement mechanisms.
