Vietnam would face challenge to realise railway plans
Monday, September 12, 2022
Significance
Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding on developing such a line with Japan in 2006, but the National Assembly shelved the scheme in 2010. The new project could cost up to USD59bn.
Impacts
- China may try to put itself forward as a potential financer, pointing to the large funds at its disposal.
- Private sector players would look to secure contracts linked to the project.
- There may be disagreement within the government over the project’s economic viability.
