UN mission faces uncertain future in Congo

Wednesday, August 10, 2022

Significance

This followed recurrent demonstrations against the UN peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) since July 26, which turned violent and left some 36 people dead.

Impacts

  • Strong public emotions may trigger further violence against MONUSCO staff, other UN personnel or even by extension just expatriates.
  • Anti-MONUSCO sentiments may become an election theme to be exploited by populist politicians.
  • Reductions in MONUSCO’s logistical capacities may make timely elections in 2023 even less likely.
