Significance

At its 13th National Congress in January-February 2021, the CPV elected Trong to serve a third term as party leader. Trong continues to oversee a campaign against corruption in various party and state institutions.

Impacts

Vuong Dinh Hue, currently chair of the National Assembly, is probably the favourite to succeed Trong.
The financial sector will likely be a key focus of the anti-corruption campaign.
CPV infighting should not affect government stability.
