Russian threat will boost Sweden-Finland cooperation
Tuesday, February 15, 2022
Significance
Sweden and Finland have a strong defence partnership and together work closely with NATO. Both are concerned about Russia's intentions, especially in their neighbourhood. Talk of a Russian invasion has revived a long-running debate in both countries about NATO membership. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says the “door remains open".
Impacts
- The deterrent value of a reinforced US military presence in Europe will reassure NATO's allies.
- The Russian threat will put pressure on Western European countries to increase security and defence spending.
- If either Sweden or Finland were to join NATO, support for membership would probably rise in the other country.
