US Biden would face COVID-19 and Dem rifts, if elected

Thursday, August 13, 2020

Significance

Former Vice President Joe Biden will formally become the party’s presidential candidate for the November 3 election, joined by Senator Kamala Harris (California) as running mate. Once the convention is complete, the Biden-Harris ticket will begin campaigning to defeat President Donald Trump.

Impacts

  • A Biden cabinet would need to accommodate centrist and progressive Democrats.
  • Biden would appoint technocrats to lead federal agencies.
  • Biden may be unwilling to relinquish some of the power accrued to the presidency under Trump.
  • Beijing and Moscow might seek to reset relations under Biden, choose to test his resolve early, or both.
