Migration threatens new Greek government’s popularity

Thursday, November 28, 2019

Significance

Recently elected New Democracy (ND) Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis enjoys positive public approval, according to all the latest polls. Nevertheless, some of ND’s voters seem concerned about a recent rise in migration. This would not have made trouble for Mitsotakis, were it not that his party’s right-wing is visibly concerned about the latest developments too.

Impacts

  • An increased wave of irregular migrants coming from Turkey will put further strain on bilateral relations.
  • More guards on the Turkish land border and on the islands, and more maritime patrols, will boost public-sector employment.
  • The ‘No child alone’ policy of relocating or reuniting with relatives unaccompanied minors balances a policy toughening.
