Israeli debates on religion will have economic impacts

Debates over the role of religion in society, especially the privileges of the ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) community, have emerged as a central theme ahead of September’s election.
- Without reform, a growing Haredi population will pose an increasing economic burden.
- Even with the impetus of a decidedly secular government, changes to Haredi education systems would be slow.
- There will be further clashes over public observance of the Sabbath.
